The Reykjavik Police Have An Instagram Full Of Puppies, Kittens And Ice Cream

8 Comments and 18 Shares

Most police departments have a strenuous relationship with the people that they are charged to protect, but it doesn’t seem like that’s the case in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik, judging by the good-looking officers and good times on their Instagram.

Obviously, their Instagram probably isn’t the best way to honestly gauge the Icelandic police force’s relationship with regular citizens, but they’ve still got one record to be proud of – their first-ever shooting death occurred in 2013, when they shot an armed man who had opened fire on two officers.

This makes me think people aren't meant to live in high densities. It's too stressful not to know everyone around you all the time.

Maybe this is a crazy question, but how did Europeans know what Africans looked like? I know that some of the paintings here are of North Africans/Middle Easterners, but others clearly depict people born south of the Sahara. I've heard of Prester John but I never imagined that medieval Europeans were aware that Prester John would have had brown skin. Am I missing something?

Like. There are a lot of things I could say here. But I’m just going to do my best to answer your question, and the answer is either very simple or very complicated, depending on your current point of view.

1. “They” knew what people with brown skin looked like because people with brown skin had been there literally THE ENTIRE TIME. Some (and father back, ALL) of “them” had brown skin themselves.

2. “People with Brown Skin” and “Europeans” are not separate and mutually exclusive groups.

3. No matter how far back you go, the mythical time that you’re looking for, when all-white, racially and culturally isolated Europe was “real”, will continue to recede from your grasp until it winkles out the like imaginary place it is.

We can just keep going back. In every area, from all walks of life, rich and poor, kings and peasants, artists and iconoclasts, before there were countries and continents, before there were white people.

The time when “EVERYONE” in Europe was White does not exist. They knew what people with brown skin looked like because they were there. They knew what “Africans” looked like because they were there, and they weren’t “they”, they were us, or you. I think what you’re missing is something that never existed.

I like the part where he never answers the question. In all seriousness, from 400-1500 AD there were very few black people north of Spain, and the questioner deserved an explanation of how those few black people got there, and how medieval society regarded them.

You don't think vikings and other groups moved slaves up from other areas, at a minimum? And if the moorish provinces were the height of civilization for the majority of that period, surely they sent ambassadors further north?

Sat, I think we're talking past each other. I agree with you 100% ... it's just that the author never bothered to say what you just said. He just went "here let me linkdump a bunch of paintings," when he should have said, "so the Arabs were in contact with Dahomey and Timbuktu, and the Italians were in contact with the Arabs, etc."

I can understand someone not realizing that, say, trade was far-ranging in the particularly distant past but it's just boggling that you could believe that held true any later than the Roman empire. How could you look at something like http://pelagios.github.io/pelagios-heatmap/ and not realize that empires move people around – particularly soldiers and the merchants for whom the soldiers are making an area safe for business…

Is This Anti-Speeding PSA Too Real for America?

4 Comments and 18 Shares

Wow. This public safety spot from New Zealand really brings home how decisions we casually make while driving can have grave consequences.

The PSA questions the whole idea that traffic violence is somehow unavoidable, the result of fate more than human error. In the United States the notion that traffic collisions are nothing but tragic “accidents” remains baked right into the language that most people use to describe these incidents.

We were alerted to this video by Erik Griswold, who asserted that the Federal Highway Administration and the Ad Council “would never allow” such a powerful public safety message about speeding to air here in the United States.

Where I live they are called "wrecks" not accidents. As in "There was a wreck." or "We wrecked." I just try to remember that all the other vehicles on the road are driven by people who are actively intent on killing me. So far, so good...
